Institute of Theatre and Film Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (ITFR SAS) is the center of basic research into the theory and history of theatre, film, radio and television. Institute was founded in 1953 and its current structure was established in 1990 under the name Department of Theatre and Film Research SAS (Kabinet divadla a filmu SAV). Since 1.7.2010 it carries its actual name – Institut of Theatre and Film Research of Slovak Academy of Sciences (Ústav divadelnej a filmovej vedy SAV). ITFR of the SAS is the most prominent research institution focusing predominantely on Slovak theatre and film within broader transnational, social, cultural or political contexts. The Institute as an external educational institution provides doctoral studies - three-year study programme aesthetics in the field of study 2.1.6 aesthetics, publishes a quarterly The Slovak Theatre : Review of Dramatic Arts, organizes scientific conferences, publishes scientific books and collections.

The journal entitled Slovenské divadlo : revue dramatických umení (The Slovak Theatre : Review of Dramatic Arts) has been published since 1953. It is the most important Slovakia’s journal dedicated to the theory and history of Theatre, Film, Radio and Television Art. The journal is illustrated. Each year‘s volume contains approximately 450 pages.
