Title of project: Creation and Crique of Values in Contemporary Arts (Visual Arts, Theater, Film)

Duration: 1. 7. 2020 – 30. 6. 2024
Registration number: APVV-19-0522
Co-ordinating organisation: Art Research Centre SAS - Institute of Art History
Annotation: Value creation in contemporary art is related to the search for ways out of the social and cultural crisis, proposing alternative solutions and testing of their possibilities. The project builds on current art historical studies in the power fields of images. It deals with following questions: What forces influence and shape imagery? What media and in what forms this imagery materializes in contemporary visual arts, contemporary theater and contemporary film? Based on a critical review of current art history methodologies, the project focuses on exploring imagery in contemporary arts. The processes analyzed are in relation to technological progress, the distribution of knowledge, and the related relativizing of consensual conventions in the truth production processes. The project has the ambition to identify, define and further explore value systems in contemporary art in relation to a free society in the context of neoliberal capitalism. We will look for answers to questions about what art can be critical in the era of market mechanism governance, how art disrupts or restores traditional or otherwise established values in relation to responsibility of individuals with respect to society and the world, culture and history. What or who is the arbiter of these values and how do the values created by contemporary art relate to the themes of today's world (migration, climate change, ethics of truth)? In the past three decades, history of arts and related disciplines have been confronted with discontinuities in the evolution of the art in ideologically divided world, as well as with the cultural decolonization. It is one of the project's priorities to explore Slovak contemporary art in an international context. The artistic practices that have taken active positions after 1989 will be compared in relation to the reflection of controversial historical events and related to the determining themes of collective existence.

Title of project: Poetics of contemporary performance art
Principal investigator: Mgr. Michaela Mojžišová, PhD.
Duration: 1. 1. 2019 – 31. 12. 2022
Registration number: VEGA 2/0110/19
Co-ordinating organisation: Institute of Theatre and Film Research of the Art Research centre SAS
Annotation: The theatre of the 20th century has been marked by reforms bringing new ideas and artistic initiatives. The modern European theatre of the 21st century follows those ideas. However, original poetics and theoretical concepts are no longer sufficient: today's theatre-makers are shifting within the time they create and respond to it. The aim of the project is to characterize the poetics of contemporary performance art and to define how art-social discourse works through today's "live art". The theatre will be seen as an art that while pointing to the crisis of values at the same time offers the basis for its resolution. The structure of the project, therefore, consists of three interconnected topics, which enables us to get to know the contemporary poetics: research of the 1. archetypes in the contemporary theatre, 2. of the contemporary engaged theatre and the authentic theatre. The project focuses on basic research of production and authoring procedures, but also on thematic and discourse analyzes and commented historiographic, theoretical and aesthetic comparison.
